![]() Today, I'll share with you my tip on this subject. Working with multiple Java versions in your machine is a normal thing, especially if you're a Java developer, and because I'm a (very) lazy person, I'm always looking for a quicker/easier way to make the switch. So whenever Oracle will release the update, I can simple upgrade via package manager. The Wepupd8 team didn’t add any binary for Oracle JAVA installation and they made a script to download the Oracle JAVA from Oracle website and install it straight away. Personally I prefer using Wepupd8 PPA to manage JAVA installation, it makes my life a lot more easier especially for updates. If for some reason an alternative-managed file is not a symlink, update-alternatives will consider that the alternative is broken and will refuse to touch it.If you're using Ubuntu Linux on your daily basis work, you've probably Java installed on your machine. Note that in Java’s case specifically, on Debian and derivatives, the alternatives handling is a little more complex and you should use update-java-alternatives instead of manipulating all the alternatives manually. You can use these to provide your own alternatives if necessary. When a package wishes to provide an alternative, it installs it using update-alternatives -install (and appropriate parameters) when it wishes to remove an alternative, it does so using update-alternatives -remove. On Fedora, RHEL, and derivatives, the files are stored in /var/lib/alternatives. The list of available alternatives for a given command (or file, in general - alternatives aren’t limited to commands) is stored in a file in /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives on Debian and derivatives thus the alternatives for java are stored in /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/java. The way update-alternatives works is described in its manpage.
